The brake master cylinder is a high-precision hydraulic pump that initiates the braking process. When you depress the brake pedal, an internal piston pushes brake fluid through the brake lines to the calipers (disc brakes) or wheel cylinders (drum brakes). This pressurized fluid forces the brake pads against the rotors, creating the friction necessary to slow or stop your vehicle.
When to Replace Your Master Cylinder
Brake master cylinders are built to last, but heat, moisture, and contaminated fluid will eventually wear out the internal rubber seals. Replace your master cylinder if you notice:
-
A “Sinking” Brake Pedal
-
Spongy or Mushy Feel
-
Brake Warning Light
-
Contaminated Fluid
